John Hoskison
John Hoskison has been a professional golfer for over thirty years and is a Class ‘A’ member of the British PGA. He has been a member of the full European Tour and currently competes on the European Seniors Tour.
John's interest in writing came to fruition In 1992 when Golf Monthly magazine invited John onto the teaching panel where he contributed instruction articles - this led to opportunities for writing about golf and sport in general. Although John teaches and writes about golf he also plays competitive golf for a living.
John's Prison Experience
John has also seen a darker side of life. In 1994, inexplicably, he broke a life long discipline and accepted a drink after a golf match. On his short drive home he hit and killed a cyclist and in the blink of an eye John's life was turned upside down. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
Swapping the safety of green fairways for the medievil squalor and brutality of some of the toughest prisons in Britain, John was only able to survive through the incredible forgiveness shown to him, and by using the important life lessons he had learned through sport.. Staggered by his experiences he wrote a book called 'Inside - one man's experience of prison'. The book has become widely regarded as one of the most important and accurate portrayals of prisons in Britain.
- 'An appalling experience that could have happened to almost any of us'. Sir Steven Tumim - Daily Express.
- 'This is a must read book. Not just an insight into how prison really is, but a real life story that illustrates just how quickly life can turn upside down. There but for the grace of God'. John Francome - Best Selling Author and Champion Jockey.
- A journey to hell and back. Entertaining, and 100 times more scary than any drink/drive campaign. FHM Magazine
John now spends his time combining his passion for golf with a huge speaking programme at schools where he talks to pupils about the importance of sport in society, and about the dangers of taking unnecessary risks. John has recently allowed his book to be made available as an ebook as the prison debate still rages on, and society in Britain desperately needs sport to be positively promoted.
John currently lives in Newbury and is attached to the Newbury Golf Centre in the middle of the famous Newbury Racecourse.
